At the end of this week, predominantly sunny and extremely cold weather is expected in Latvia - in some places, the thermometer may drop to -30 degrees, forecasters predict.
Starting from Thursday, clouds will cover the sky only occasionally. Light snow and frost are expected in some areas. The wind will blow from weak to moderate from the east.
The air temperature will gradually decrease, and Sunday will be the coldest day of the week: in the morning, most regions of the country will experience -20 to -30 degrees, and by midday, many areas will be below -15 degrees. In the northern part of Kurzeme, the frosts will be milder, as the wind will blow from the Gulf of Riga.
According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, on Monday, February 2, temperatures in the eastern and central regions of Latvia may drop to -28 to -33 degrees at night. Such frosts are possible only under clear skies and light winds throughout the night.
The last time a temperature of -30 degrees was recorded in Latvia was on January 8, 2024, and -33 degrees has not been recorded since February 2012.
Ice formation at sea will intensify. Next week, it is expected that most of the Gulf of Riga will be covered with ice, with a thickness forecasted by the website "marine.meteo.lv" to be 5-20 centimeters, and up to 40 centimeters in the northern part of the gulf near Estonia. It is prohibited to go out onto the ice at sea.
January has become the coldest month in Latvia since February 2012 and the coldest January since 2010.
A weakening of the frosts is expected from the middle of next week.
