Mid-January in Latvia was eight degrees colder than usual

The average air temperature in Latvia during the second decade of January dropped to -10.3 degrees, which is 8.1 degrees lower than normal, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The maximum frost recorded in the observation network was -24.5 degrees on January 20 in Daugavpils, while the maximum air temperature was -1.8 degrees on January 16 in Pāvilosta.

The smallest temperature deviation from the norm was recorded in Kolka, where the average air temperature in mid-January was 5.5 degrees lower than usual, and at the Daugavpils observation station, the second decade of the month was 10.7 degrees colder than the average for 1991-2020.

The total precipitation in Latvia in mid-January was only 1.8 millimeters, or 12% of the norm. The snowiest area was Irbene in the Ventspils region, where 5.3 millimeters fell, while the least precipitation was 0.3 millimeters in Zvejniekciems.

The entire country was covered with a layer of snow more than five centimeters thick, and at the beginning of the decade, the snow cover reached 30 centimeters in some places.

On Tuesday, January 20, the average daily air temperature in Latvia dropped to 11 degrees below normal, reaching -14.2 degrees.

In the previous nights, the strongest frost since January 2024 was recorded, and the average monthly temperature is currently the lowest since February 2012.
