Severe frosts are expected in Latvia this coming weekend and next week, meteorologists forecast, writes LETA.

January 22 will be the warmest day of this week — the air temperature will rise to -2 to -8 degrees, however, due to a moderate eastern wind, it will feel colder outside. Light snow is expected in some areas, and the wind may stir up old snow — blizzards are possible.

In the following days, the air temperature will gradually decrease, and on Sunday morning in many regions of the country, especially in Latgale and Vidzeme, it may drop below -20 degrees. Frosts of -20 degrees and lower are also possible next week.

Cloudiness will be variable, with light snow expected at times, and the wind will be weak to moderate, predominantly from the east.

According to current forecasts, both severe frosts and brief thaws are possible at the beginning of February. February is expected to be generally colder than the climatic norm.
