On Wednesday, the sun will shine in some areas of Latvia, and light snow is expected in places, forecasters predict.

The fog will dissipate, and the hoarfrost will gradually fall off. The eastern wind will become moderate, with gusts reaching 17 meters per second in Kolka by evening.

The maximum air temperature will range from -3 to -9 degrees, and in some southern regions of the country, from -10 to -12 degrees.

In Riga, significant precipitation is not expected, a weak eastern wind will blow, and by evening the air temperature will rise to -6 degrees.

Atmospheric pressure in Latvia has dropped to 1019–1023 hPa at sea level, while a new anticyclone is strengthening in northeastern Europe.

The average daily air temperature has dropped to 11 degrees below normal

On Tuesday, the average daily air temperature in Latvia fell to 11 degrees below normal — to -14.2 degrees, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), reports LETA.

The norm, that is, the average air temperature on January 20 from 1991 to 2020, is -3.3 degrees. The lowest average daily temperature norm is recorded from January 22 to 26, as well as on February 6, down to -4.0 degrees.

The minimum air temperature on Tuesday in the LEGMC observation network was -24.5 degrees in the morning in Daugavpils. Also, on Wednesday at 4 a.m., the thermometer at the meteorological station in Daugavpils showed -24.5 degrees.

This is the strongest frost in Latvia since January 8, 2024, when in some areas of Latgale the air temperature reached -30 degrees.

January of this year is expected to be the coldest month since February 2012 or 2011, when the average temperature across the country was -8.8 and -8.9 degrees, respectively. This month may become the coldest since January 2010, when the average temperature dropped to -11.5 degrees.
