In Riga, there will be a charge of 6 euros for the disposal of Christmas trees discarded after the deadline

"Can I dispose of used 'live' Christmas trees for free this year? Reader bb.lv."

According to information posted on the website of the Riga City Council, this year, as in previous years, residents will be able to dispose of Christmas/New Year trees for free.

It is important to remember that trees designated for disposal cannot be thrown into household waste containers; they must be neatly stacked next to the containers or in designated areas, thoroughly stripped of festive decorations, removed from pots or containers, and must not be wrapped in film, bags, etc.

It is important to note that disposal conditions may vary depending on the district. For example, in the Zemgale suburb, free disposal of Christmas trees is provided for both individuals and legal entities (including apartment buildings) — naturally, with a valid waste disposal contract — until January 31. The length of the tree must not exceed 2 meters; longer trees must be cut into pieces.

In the Northern district and Vidzeme suburb, free disposal of trees is provided for requests received by January 19. Latecomers will have to pay at a rate of 6 euros/tree. The maximum allowable length is up to 2.5 meters; if the tree is taller, the disposal conditions will be discussed separately.

In the Latgale suburb, Central, and Kurzeme districts: residents can submit requests until January 20 (after which disposal will become chargeable). The height limit is also up to 2.5 meters (taller trees must be cut).
