Today, registration opens for free Latvian courses

Today, the application process opens for free Latvian language courses organized by the municipality of Riga. This year, at least 596 adult residents of Riga, whose native language is not Latvian, will have the opportunity to study the Latvian language, reported the Riga City Council administration.

Registration for the courses can only be done in person. The municipality does not accept applications for the courses. To register for the courses, participants must contact the chosen educational institution starting today.

Adult residents of Riga, who have declared their place of residence in Riga, excluding students and unemployed individuals, will have the opportunity to study the Latvian language for free in these courses. The courses will allow students to master the Latvian language at levels A and B.

There will be an opportunity to apply for courses at four educational institutions, the list of which will be published on January 12 in the morning on the website of the Riga District Center "www.apkaimes.lv" in the "Integration" section, under the "Latvian Language Courses" subsection. Information about educational institutions can be obtained by calling Riga's free information hotline 1201.

In 2026, the municipality of Riga plans to enroll at least 596 students in 46 study groups for free Latvian language courses.

For comparison, in 2025, 597 residents of Riga attended Latvian language courses co-financed by the municipality of Riga, which were held in 44 groups. Of these, 29 groups had the opportunity to study the Latvian language at the basic level (A), while 15 groups studied at the intermediate level (B). The number of groups for in-person and distance learning was the same — 20 groups, and in another four groups, classes were conducted in both in-person and distance formats.

Starting from 2023, course participants are also given the opportunity to improve their Latvian language skills in conversation club classes. In 2026, it is planned to organize five conversation clubs, which will allow at least 66 course participants to enhance their language skills.

The municipality of Riga has been organizing Latvian language courses for residents of Riga for the sixteenth year. This opportunity was first provided to residents of Riga in 2011, and since then, over 16,300 residents of Riga have attended the courses.

In 2026, the organization of free Latvian language courses will cost the municipality 150,188 euros.
