Holidays from Grandfather Frost - at what air temperature can children stay home from school

Frost is not retreating; moreover, meteorologists predict that it will only intensify next week. That is why it is important to remember safety measures and health strengthening for students during the winter period.

According to the rules of the Cabinet of Ministers, students under the age of 12 (grades 1-5) can stay home from school when the air temperature is below minus 20°C, and students aged 13 and older (from grade 6) can stay home when the air temperature is below minus 25°C.

Cases of missing classes due to frost are justified. If children still come to the educational institution, classes are conducted in a form corresponding to the teacher's choice. Educational institutions operate under any weather conditions, and frost cannot be a reason for their employees not to show up for work.

In cases where low temperatures are expected, the educational institution, together with the municipality, may decide to organize classes on those days, informing students and their parents in advance. The safety and health of children are of paramount importance in any situation. Parents should assess the situation and decide whether their child will attend the educational institution, taking into account how much time they will have to spend traveling to and from school and whether there will be a need to stop at public transport stops. Parents are also advised to pay attention to their child's clothing in frosty weather.

According to Cabinet Rule No. 890, outdoor walks for children under three years old are not organized when the air temperature is below minus 10 °C.

However, winter weather and frost are not reasons to keep a child indoors – it is important to choose suitable and beneficial activities that both the child and the parents will enjoy.
