Why the Deposit System Does Not Accept Wine and Champagne Bottles

Wine and champagne bottles are not yet included in the deposit system, and this is unlikely to change in the near future, as the decision depends on legislation.

In the TV24 program "Uz līnijas," the chairman of the board of Depozīta iepakojuma operators, Miks Sturitis, was a guest. He answered a viewer's question about when the deposit system would allow the return of champagne and wine bottles.

"The deposit system should include those types of products and beverages that people consume outside the home, primarily outside the home," Sturitis explained.

He noted that any expansion of the system should be based on monitoring data regarding which packaging systematically ends up in nature. The study also confirmed that 82% of residents noticed that nature has become cleaner since the introduction of the deposit system.

As an example, he mentioned alcoholic cocktails. After the implementation of the deposit system, it was found that a large quantity of containers from strong alcoholic cocktails, which were initially not included in the system, still remains in forests and along roadsides. This became the basis for proposing to the government to expand the deposit system, and starting from January 1, 2023, a deposit was introduced for alcoholic cocktails with an alcohol content of up to 15%. "Currently, we have not identified such a sharp group of products that systematically ends up in nature and could be compared to alcoholic cocktails. But I do not want to say that there are none — that is why monitoring is needed. We could look towards strong alcoholic beverages," he added.
