On the morning of the last day of the year, the lowest air temperature in Latvia was recorded at the Liepaja airport, where the thermometer dropped to -15 degrees — the strongest frost in the country since February, reports LETA, citing data from the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LCEGM).

According to the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LCEGM), at 7 AM, the air temperature ranged from -2.6 degrees in Daugavgriva to -13.3 in Saldus and -13.4 in Rucava.

The snow cover thickness at the country's meteorological stations at that time ranged from less than one centimeter in Ainazi, Skulte, Daugavgriva, Mersrags, the port of Ventspils, and Priekuli to 13 centimeters in Aluksne and Dagda, as well as 14 centimeters in Liepaja.

At the LCEGM meteorological stations, snow thickness is measured using an ultrasonic sensor on a specially prepared site. Since meteorological stations are usually located in open areas, the wind can blow snow off the observation site or, conversely, create a snowdrift, so the average snow cover thickness in the region can significantly differ from the data of the meteorological station.

Meteorologists forecast that after a fairly sunny day on the festive evening and night, snow clouds moving from the sea from the northwest to the southeast will cross Latvia. Light snow is expected in many areas, with heavy snowfall in some places, especially in the coastal zone.

The night of New Year's Eve will be the coldest of this winter — the air temperature in many places will drop below -10 degrees, and in some areas, below -15. The strongest frost is expected in Vidzeme and Latgale.

At the beginning of 2026, weather conditions will be determined by a large cyclone. On January 1, a snowstorm is expected in Kurzeme, which will reach the central part of the country by evening, and late in the evening, snowfall and a snowstorm will begin in eastern Latvia as well. Heavy snowfall and snowstorms are expected in some areas, meteorologists warn.
