On the last day of the outgoing year and on New Year's Eve, the sky over most of Latvia will be clear, which will lead to increased frosts. However, on January 1, a vast area of precipitation will move over Latvia from the west — in the following days, snow and blizzards will be observed in some places, forecasters report, according to LETA.
On the night of December 31, snowfalls and blizzards are expected in some areas. The lowest air temperature will be in Kurzeme — with clear skies and calm winds, the thermometer may drop to -10..-12 degrees.
The last day of 2025 will be sunny in most parts of the country, with more clouds remaining in the easternmost regions; snow is also possible in some places along the coast. With a light or moderate northern wind, the air temperature will not rise above -1..-7 degrees.
On New Year's Eve, snow will fall in some areas. Under clear skies in the eastern part of Latvia, the air temperature will drop to -15..-18 degrees. The wind will be weak.
On January 1, the sky will begin to cloud over from the west, snowfalls and blizzards will start, with heavy snow expected in some areas, and rain is also anticipated in the west of Kurzeme in the evening. On Friday, January 2, the air temperature will rise to -1..+4 degrees, with snow and light rain in most regions, and a gusty southern wind will blow.
By the end of the week, snow will continue to fall in some areas, with possible heavy snowfalls and blizzards. The air temperature in most regions of the country will be slightly below zero.
According to the Global Forecast System, by the end of the week, the snow cover in several areas will reach 15–25 centimeters. The most precipitation is expected in Kurzeme, where thaws and snow melting are also more likely.
Ice cover is continuing to form on water bodies. Hydrologists remind that young ice is still thin and it is dangerous to go out on it.
