At the end of the week, a cyclone will approach the territory of Latvia, bringing with it strong and gusty winds, as well as precipitation, according to forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

This weekend, it will be windy across the country, and near the coast, the northwestern wind gusts may exceed 90 km/h – this is a dangerous, "strong storm" (10 points on the Beaufort scale). Such winds cause significant destruction: tearing off roofs, breaking large trees, uprooting them, and ripping power lines.

However, let’s evaluate the weather in order. On Friday, there will be variable cloudiness in the sky, with fewer clouds in the east. Light precipitation – rain and wet snow – is expected only at night in the eastern regions of the country. In the evening, fog will form in some areas of the western regions.

Initially, a moderate westerly wind will turn from the northwest, from the north – at night in many places, and during the day on the Vidzeme coast, its gusts will reach 50-60 km/h. The minimum air temperature at night across most of the country will range from –1 to +4°C. During the day, the air will warm up to +3…+7°C, and in the eastern regions – to +1…+3°C.

On Saturday and Sunday, as the influence of the cyclone intensifies, not only the amount of precipitation will increase, but also the wind speed.

By Sunday evening, with the arrival of a colder air mass, the temperature will drop, and rain will turn into wet snow and snow. In some areas of the central and eastern regions, a snow cover of several centimeters will form.

Due to the gusty wind during the snowfall, visibility will significantly worsen.

Alongside this process, the wind will also strengthen – in the second half of Saturday, an orange warning for very strong winds starting from 90 km/h may already be announced in coastal areas. Strong winds will persist on Sunday – in most parts of the country, its gusts will reach 50-60 km/h, and on the coast – almost 100 km/h. In the afternoon, the wind will begin to gradually weaken.

The air temperature, both during the day and at night, will mainly be in the range of –1…+4°C, with the thermometer rising to +3…+7°C only during the day on Saturday.

At the beginning of the new week, the synoptic situation will remain similar – gusty winds will continue, especially in the western and coastal areas, and precipitation, mainly snow and wet snow, is expected in many places across the country, resulting in a snow cover forming over a larger area. A colder air mass will continue to gradually flow into the country, so the air temperature will tend to decrease, and across the country, both during the day and at night, the thermometer will no longer rise above 0°C.

At the turn of the year on December 31, snow is expected, with more intense precipitation in the western and central regions. The weather will be wintery cold – during the day, the air temperature will remain in the range of –2…–6°C, and at night, in some places, the air will cool down to –10°C.
