Christmas of Christ or a Pagan Festival of Death: What is Celebrated in Jūrmala?

Currently, in Jūrmala on Jomas Street, a row of Christmas trees has been lined up, decorated, as far as can be understood from the captions under each tree, by various city organizations.

All of this looks very beautiful and festive, with a New Year theme — snowflakes, gnomes, stars, bags of gifts, and so on. It is nice that almost all the decorations are not bought in stores, but made by hand.

However, one little Christmas tree, in our opinion, noticeably stands out from the overall theme: it is decorated with skeletons of various sizes, some rather unfriendly-looking owls, and other attributes that would be more suitable for Halloween than for Christmas and New Year. We would like to know what the Karlsbāde society meant by decorating their tree in such a strange way?"

Answers Liga Ramane, the chairwoman of the public organization Karlsbāde:

– Our society is known in Jūrmala primarily for organizing Halloween celebrations. Our last event, which we held at the end of October, generated incredible interest. We prepared for it very carefully, and it truly became unforgettable and brought great joy to the residents.

So we decided to transfer Halloween attributes to our Christmas and New Year tree as a kind of our "business card." This is how others who decorated their trees did as well: some had gnomes made of cardboard, some had knitted toys, and musicians had notes and clefs on their trees. And we have Halloween characters: pots with "witch's brew," cheerful skeletons, and our logo — the bird Žubīween.
