The head of the Latvian Ministry of the Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis ("New Unity"), reported at a government meeting last Tuesday on the implementation of the program to eradicate crimes against children.
Among various initiatives, such as organizing sobering centers for schoolchildren or improving the inmate information system IIS to ensure filtering, selection, and loading of data on juvenile recidivism, there is also an unusual one.
Namely: Latvia plans to develop and maintain a website that would provide information about the possibility of obtaining necessary support (!) for individuals who fear they may commit a sexual offense against a child.
In other words, pedophiles are encouraged to call specially trained individuals before committing a crime – perhaps they can persuade the potential offender to reconsider attacking a minor victim. It is said that such a phone line is already operational in Britain.
All of this seems strange, but if it helps prevent even one crime, then let it be. However, so far, the hotline for maniacs is still just a plan by the Ministry of the Interior.
