A Cat Owner and an Allergic Person in a Riga Apartment: How Can They Coexist?

My sister and I are pensioners living in a two-room apartment, but our relationship is cool. Recently, she got a cat, knowing that I am allergic to animal fur.

I promised to keep the cat in the room, but the animal constantly goes into common areas. As a result, we have constant conflicts.

We can't resolve this problem peacefully; my sister thinks I am against the cat out of spite, while I am truly suffering. Is there any way to legally compel my sister to get rid of the cat, or is the only option for us to part ways (which is very difficult for both of us, both financially and physically)? Answered by Alevtina Grigorenko, lawyer:

– At first glance, this seems to be a domestic conflict; however, based on the content of the question, one of the women living in the apartment is in a rather dangerous situation, as allergic reactions can threaten health and sometimes lead to life-threatening conditions. Therefore, this conflict needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

When it comes to the legal side of the issue, it is first important to understand who is authorized to resolve this conflict. Any legal relationships are governed either by a contract or by law. In this case, it is impossible to determine from the question whose property the apartment is or if it involves rental relationships, what rights and obligations each party has, how disputes are resolved, etc.

Therefore, the only advice in such a situation is to consult a specialist (lawyer) who can offer an optimal solution based on the specifics. They may recommend contacting a social service: proper communication with a social worker can positively influence the situation.
