The Increase of Retirement Age in Latvia is Inevitable – Professor

An unflattering forecast for those who have not yet retired was given by Professor Henrijs Kalkis from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Latvia in an interview with Neatkarīgā.

“And this is not just a problem for Latvia. In Europe, America, and many places around the world, there is talk about the necessity of raising the retirement age because life expectancy is increasing, in recent years the quality of life for people has improved, and in Western Europe, it is no longer considered that we will reach retirement age and simply receive a pension and live peacefully.

People are now looking with a long-term vision, trying to understand how they could develop themselves to maintain their employability and be full members of society, balancing both social activity and rest. This is how society is changing now.”

“And I think it will inevitably be the case that, considering all economic factors, the retirement age will have to be raised,” the scholar said.

“Objectively considering reality, people live longer, their employability will also last longer, and many will want to work – several professors have studied this on a global level. But there are questions: can I work or not, and do other employees in the team accept this, because often these people have invaluable work experience that can be passed on to others through mentorship. And if this way mental, physical, and social well-being is formed.”

In the professor's opinion, “this is a very good direction because any person with these three components will be both a full member of society and will contribute to the economy.”
