A lot has already been written about various situations where human labor is undervalued. This time, a publication by the League received wide attention as it shared a job posting for a chief librarian with an unexpectedly low salary on social media, writes LA.LV.

The League published a post on the Threads platform showing that the Limbaži region is looking for a chief librarian. The proposed monthly salary is €984. With irony, it was captioned: “Such an enticing offer.”

The comments reflect a sad mood — the proposed salary, considering the requirements, is puzzling. “It comes out to €786.16 net. Nothing special. €300 a month goes for food, plus there’s rent and utilities. Maybe housing is cheap in Limbaži?” shares Diana with her calculations.

The ratio of salary to requirements is so disheartening that, for example, for Liene, it influenced her choice of profession. While she once wanted to become a librarian, after studying the job market and the cost of education, she quickly changed her mind.

Others also express their thoughts:

  • “Recently, many tried to convince me that a salary at this level is still good for Latvia. Maybe it was good 20 years ago, but today it’s peanuts.”
  • “And you also need to study to become a librarian, and education costs money too.”
  • “I am astonished by such job postings. Such a salary… And the requirements? Experience in municipal institutions is preferred, project management, and — most importantly — a higher education! For such pay? Sad…”
  • “A vacancy for a retiree, to have some extra income.”
  • “Unfortunately, in our country, salaries are a sadness that only brings tears.”
  • “That’s why the vacancy is still open.”
  • “A good salary — enough to live for a week.”
  • “Slave wages, I hope no one applies.”
