Today at 13:00, a strengthened protective dam on the Daugava will be opened in Jekabpils, the Jekabpils regional municipality reported to LETA.

The works were carried out as part of the project "Flood Risk Prevention in Jekabpils" aimed at updating and constructing infrastructure that reduces flood risks and protects the city from flooding.

Representatives of government institutions, local authorities, and builders will participate in the ceremony, which will take place near the dam at the intersection of Viestura and Plavinu streets.

At 17:40, a traditional torchlight procession will begin at the dam in honor of Lāčplēsis Day, which will then proceed along the dam to Kļavu Street and across the bridge over the Daugava to Rīgas Street.

The procession will conclude with a minute of silence at the monument "For Those Who Fell for the Fatherland."

The total expenditure for the implementation of the dam strengthening project amounted to €16.931 million, of which €14.391 million was allocated from the European Regional Development Fund, €1.898 million from the state budget, and €641,347 from local government funds.
