Riga City Council member (NA) and former history teacher Kaspars Spunde revealed on TV24's program 'National Interests Club' that some students do not possess knowledge of the Latvian language even in grades 8-9.
Since September 1 of this year, the former primary school of Čiekurkalns, which previously provided education in Russian, has been merged with the Latvian 45th Secondary School of Riga. This transition has revealed a number of problems that have arisen and been tolerated over the years.
"In the classes assigned to me from grades 6 to 9, half of the students had very poor or no knowledge of the Latvian language at all," says Spunde. He acknowledges that some students even openly stated that they did not know the Latvian language.
Spunde notes that the transition to education in Latvian has been taking place over several years, but experience shows that it has been formal and existed only on paper. "Therefore, the question arises: at what point did the falsification of educational results occur? Was it on the part of the Ministry of Education, where everyone reported that everything was great, or on the part of the schools, where these results were falsified?" says Spunde.
Otherwise, I cannot explain the situation, how it is possible that in grades 8-9 there are students who do not know the Latvian language and can only respond to my questions with 'what', he adds.
He admits that perhaps some of the students are behaving provocatively, but most simply do not understand and do not speak Latvian.
