I have 500 relatives in India, and they will all come to Latvia

Such a joyful quote from a guest of our republic is highlighted in the headline by the journalist of Neatkarīgā, Elita Veidemane.

She made a request to the local law enforcement – what are they doing about illegal immigrants?

“The main task of the Riga City Council Police is to ensure public order in the capital,” said Ieva Lukaja-Apalupa, a communication department employee, “however, within our capabilities, we support other competent institutions and services by checking the legality of the stay of individuals entering Latvia.

Such checks are most often conducted in student hotels or dormitories, at construction, industrial, and commercial sites, as well as at abandoned properties and in individual residential houses of foreign citizens. In cases where our employees identify violations during routine checks of identity and reasons for the stay of entrants, it is immediately recorded, and the information is forwarded to the responsible institutions, most often the State Border Guard.

To obtain additional information about the possible whereabouts of individuals who have illegally entered Latvia, we also contact local public organizations.”

In their daily work, the municipal police “have not recorded any incidents between local residents and individuals who have illegally entered Latvia.”

“However, when identifying and responding to complaints about conflict situations, the municipal police act in accordance with the law in all situations, regardless of nationality, race, or state affiliation.
