The Latvian youth choir “Kamēr...” under the artistic direction and conducting of Jurgis Zabulius won the prestigious trophy of the European choral competition “Grand Prix” for the fourth time in its history on Sunday in the Spanish city of Tolosa, reports LETA.
In Tolosa, “Kamēr...” competed against the choirs “Imusicapella” and “Los Cantantes de Manila” from the Philippines, “The Resonanz Children’s Choir” from Indonesia, and the Latvian choir “Sōla”.
In the final of the competition, the choir “Kamēr...” performed the composition by Adolf Sklūte “Jūrai”, the work of Henry Purcell and Sven David Sandström “Hear My Prayer, O Lord”, “Factum est silentium” by Richard Dering, “A Drop in the Ocean” by Erik Esenvalds, and “Sine Sole Nihil Sum” by Tadeusz Wójtowicz.
The right to participate in the final of the European choral “Grand Prix” this year was granted to “Kamēr...” last autumn, after winning the International Choral Competition named after Professor Georgi Dimitrov in the Bulgarian city of Varna.
The second choir from Latvia that participated in the final is “Sōla”, conducted by conductor and artistic director Kaspars Adamsons, which earned its place in Tolosa last year by winning the International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in Jūrmala. This is already the third participation of the choir “Sōla” in the final of the European choral “Grand Prix”.
The European Grand Prix for Choral Singing is an annual competition featuring the winners of six European choral competitions, with choirs from around the world eligible to participate.
Founded in 1990, the choir “Kamēr...” has previously won this competition three times — in 2004 under the direction of conductor Maris Sirmais, in 2013 under the direction of Janis Liepins, and in 2019 under the direction of Aivis Greters.
