"I am a pensioner, and my pension is small. While my husband was alive, we somehow managed together. After his death, it became very difficult.

I know that in some countries a widow continues to receive both her pension and the one earned by her husband, while in others she can choose one of the two pensions to receive going forward – her own or her husband's. Are there similar laws in Latvia?"

Valters Berg, lawyer:

In the event of the death of a pension recipient, the surviving spouse or registered partner is paid a benefit amounting to 50% of the pension that the deceased spouse/registered partner was receiving.

The benefit amount also includes an additional payment to the pension for the insurance (employment) record accumulated before December 31, 1995. The benefit is paid for 12 months from the date of death of the pension recipient.
