The nine-story panel house of series 602 on Varaviknes gata, 12 will become the first apartment building in Riga to receive a new elevator with co-financing from the European Union.
The old elevator in the building was manufactured in 1980 in Mogilev (Belarusian SSR). Such elevators have already reached the end of their service life, and although they are still safe, they require increasingly frequent and costly repairs, as well as long downtimes, the Riga City Council reported to bb.lv.
The new elevator, in addition to an energy-efficient lifting mechanism, will be equipped with wider doors to facilitate use with strollers or wheelchairs.
The total cost of the new elevator is 55,711 euros, of which 45% (25,079 euros) is covered by the European Union. The new elevator will be installed by the Finnish company KONE, one of the leading elevator manufacturers in Europe.
This year and next year, with EU support, it is planned to install another 29 new elevators in 14 buildings.
To put it bluntly, it's a little. The problem of aging elevators is relevant for most standard buildings constructed during the Soviet era. For example, there are more than 1,220 elevators in buildings managed by the Riga Housing Management.
