It is necessary to create ethnically mixed schools

The history teacher is unpleasantly surprised by the low level of proficiency in the state language among Russian-speaking students.

History teacher Edgars Krusts, who had the opportunity to work in a former school for national minorities, critically assessed the level of Latvian language proficiency among students in an interview with TV-24. "There are those who do not understand the language at all, and it is simply impossible to teach them," the educator stated, concluding that such students in former national minority schools make up about 20-25 percent.

The second group consists of those who understand but can only respond in Russian.

The third category of students includes those who can answer in Latvian using very simple sentences.

Finally, the fourth group consists of those who are fluent in Latvian. "But they are an absolute minority," the educator said.

To create a Latvian language environment, E. Krusts proposed establishing ethnically mixed schools, where 80 percent would be Latvians and 20 percent would be representatives of national minorities.
