In Latvia, 7,837 newborns were registered in the first eight months of this year, which is 11.3% or 1,000 fewer compared to the same period in 2024, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau, reports LETA.
In the first eight months of 2025, there were 4,083 boys among the registered newborns — a decrease of 5.5% or 238 compared to the same period in 2024, and 3,754 girls — a decrease of 16.9% or 762.
In August, 1,074 newborns were registered in Latvia — a decrease of 7% or 81 compared to August 2024. This included 547 boys and 527 girls.
In the first eight months of this year, 17,221 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 3.2% or 563 fewer than in the same period of 2024, when 17,784 deaths were registered.
Thus, in the first eight months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 9,384, whereas in the same period last year, this figure was 8,947.
In the first eight months of 2025, 7,733 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is an increase of 8.7% or 616 compared to the corresponding period in 2024.
According to preliminary data, as of September 1 of this year, the population of Latvia was 1.829 million people.
