These Roads Do Not Lead to the Stadium: There Will Be No National Stadium at Lucavsala

Riga may receive a National Football Stadium based on the former Skonto: Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs reported on negotiations with UEFA and LFF to attract funding. Lucavsala as a construction site is excluded from the plans. It is worth noting that a year ago new streets were ceremoniously opened on the island...

Negotiations are ongoing to attract funding for the purchase of the former Skonto Stadium with the aim of creating a National Football Stadium there, said Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs on Latvian television. According to him, there are no plans for the construction of a stadium at Lucavsala. The current issue is attracting funding for the purchase of the stadium from its current owners and developing it in Skanste, LSM+ reports.

On Wednesday, the Mayor of Riga will discuss this with a representative of the European Football Associations (UEFA) for infrastructure development and with representatives of the Latvian Football Federation (LFF). The question is whether the International Football Federation can lend funds for the implementation of this deal, Kleinbergs reported.

"We are now closer to building a football stadium than ever in the last ten years," Kleinbergs optimistically assessed the prospects. He has refrained from disclosing the amount of the potential deal.

When asked whether the previously mentioned possibility of constructing a stadium at Lucavsala has lost relevance, Kleinbergs replied: "Lucavsala has never been the place where Riga could sensibly invest so that this football stadium would not constantly incur losses. It should be located in a place with convenient access and where entrepreneurial activity can be ensured, which is necessary for the daily maintenance of the stadium," said the Mayor of Riga.
