This year, the number of calls to the crisis hotline of the "Skalbes" association has increased by a third. Callers increasingly describe not only feelings of isolation but also a loss of hope.
Let us remind you: the 24/7 unified crisis hotline 116123 is FREE and available in THREE LANGUAGES — Latvian, Russian, and English. There are also 24/7 crisis hotlines 67222922 or 27722292. Assistance is provided to those who are in Latvia. The team of the "Skalbes" association includes psychologists, social workers, and volunteers.
In the first 9 months of this year, the number of calls related to loneliness and the associated need for psychological support has increased by 34% compared to last year.
Compared to last year, it is evident that loneliness is most often faced by people with physical or mental illnesses — this year, 66% of male callers reported it (an increase of 15%), and 86% of women (a 2.5-fold increase).
Calls also reveal deeper issues – depression, anxiety, and despair. The signs of depression among women have nearly doubled: last year it was 24% of callers, and in the first 9 months of this year — 42%.
The share of people facing difficulties in relationships has also increased. While men address this issue in 18% of cases, the number of women has nearly doubled.
A new trend that the "Skalbes" association highlights this year is the rise of loneliness among people facing difficulties at work – 13% of men and 13% of women.
Financial problems have been the cause of loneliness for 15% of men and 10% of women.
