Life Without Rest: More and More Residents of Latvia Work Multiple Jobs

According to the State Revenue Service, the number of employees working at one job is 716,696, 80,655 people work at two jobs, 14,917 at three, and 7,716 at more than three, writes Diena.

According to a number of respondents, employment in multiple jobs is often a necessity, as it is impossible to achieve a full workload at one job, and other regulatory requirements limit the ability to work more at one place, making a second job a logical choice.

Working simultaneously at three jobs is very specific. This is often the case during weekdays in rural areas, where a teacher of one subject, in order to earn a decent salary, is forced to work at several schools. Additionally, this and the following category includes those individuals who simultaneously serve on the boards and councils of several enterprises.

"In the modern labor market, we are increasingly encountering workers who hold multiple jobs at the same time. This is no longer just an exception or a need for additional finances - it is a global change in the labor market," assesses the situation Baiba Rozentāle, the customer service manager of the temporary employment platform "Workis."

She acknowledges that rising living costs are undoubtedly one of the reasons why people choose to have multiple jobs at once.

"However, many work on various projects related to their personal interests alongside their stable main job. Others use this as an opportunity for career development, as the skills and experience gained in various fields make them more valuable professionals," Rozentāle explained.

She recognizes that there are employees for whom this is a way of life. "Modern workers highly value flexibility and autonomy, the ability to build a career according to their interests and personal needs," concludes Rozentāle. In her opinion, this trend is not observed in all sectors, but it is most commonly seen in industries with flexible or shift work schedules, such as hospitality, retail, logistics, and manufacturing.
