The construction of the promenade on the left bank of the Daugava is nearing completion - when will the residents of Riga be able to appreciate the work?

The construction of the promenade on Mukusalas Street in Riga is nearing completion — the municipality plans to finish the work by the end of November. The total cost of the project is about 20 million euros.

In Pardaugava, the construction of the promenade on Mukusalas Street is nearing completion. The final stages of work are taking place in the pedestrian tunnel under the roadway on Mukusalas Street, said the head of the public infrastructure development department, Mārtiņš Slimbahs. The tunnel will feature built-in lighting, and in certain areas, graffiti-resistant surfacing is planned.

On the other side of the passage, the pedestrian environment will be significantly redesigned, Slimbahs noted. Along the entire promenade from the AB dam to the roundabout on Mukusalas, about 60 yellow ladders are attached at the water's edge. These can be used to get out of the water if someone falls in. Lifebuoys are also promised to be installed there, LSM+ reports.

The illuminated promenade will also have playgrounds, swings, and restrooms. Historical railings on the banks of the Daugava have been restored, and Soviet symbols have been removed from them.

"We are practically in the final phase. This month and next month, the facility will take its final shape. Then the time for its commissioning will begin. (...) In any case, when the infrastructure is completed, for example, for pedestrians or other road users, we will open the facility as soon as possible," he said.

The organization "City for People" is generally satisfied with the project, said board member Bruņis Kibillds: "The area around the Daugava, which had significantly degraded, has been improved. The river has become much more accessible. A so-called green corridor has been created from the Stone Bridge to the road to Ķekava, continuing along Ziepniekkalna Street and further south (...). Of course, there are some shortcomings. Unfortunately, due to uncertainty regarding Rail Baltica, the section near the bridge over the Kileveina Canal has not been redesigned — there, unfortunately, steps will remain for now. It will be very difficult for cyclists and people for whom accessibility is important to move through this area."

The municipality responded that in the mentioned location, as well as in the area near the Railway Bridge, where the surface has not yet been restored, the possibility of implementing temporary solutions will be assessed.
