Veterans of cinema are preparing another hit.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to the 2000 film 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' — a family hit that dominated the box office upon its release, earning over $350 million (a huge sum at the time).
Jim Carrey is expected to return to the lead role, having played the grumpy recluse in the original film, while director Ron Howard will once again take on the direction of the sequel.
Currently, negotiations are underway with Carrey and Howard. If the project goes ahead, the sequel's script will be written by Alec Berg, known for his work on the series 'Barry' and 'Silicon Valley', as well as Jeff Schaffer ('Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Happiness') and David Mandel ('Veep'). All three are veterans of the series 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and have also worked on another adaptation of Dr. Seuss's works, the film 'The Cat in the Hat', which starred Mike Myers.
Jim Carrey was one of the biggest stars of the 1990s and early 2000s, but his acting activity has decreased in recent years. He is currently preparing to return to the role of Dr. Robotnik in 'Sonic 4', which will be released in 2027. Previously, Carrey stated that he would not mind returning to the role of the Grinch, although he noted that the complicated makeup process in the first film was unpleasant, and he would prefer to use motion capture technology.
'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' from 2000 is the first live-action film based on Dr. Seuss's children's book from 1957, and the second adaptation after the animated television special from 1966.
