On August 12, 2026, residents of Europe will be able to see the first total solar eclipse in 27 years. In many countries, it will be only partial, but in Spain, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, and day will briefly turn into night. Astronomers name the small Catalonian town of Altafulla as one of the best places for observation.

Residents of Europe are preparing for one of the rarest and most impressive astronomical events of recent decades. On August 12, 2026, the first total solar eclipse since 1999 will occur, which millions of people will be able to observe.

During the maximum phase, the Moon will completely cover the solar disk, and twilight will fall for a few minutes in broad daylight. According to astronomers, the total phase of the eclipse will only be visible in certain regions of Spain, through which the main path of this unique phenomenon will pass.

In many other countries in Europe, the eclipse will be partial. For example, in Paris, the Moon will cover more than 92% of the solar disk, but the complete disappearance of the Sun will not happen there.

Special attention has been drawn to Altafulla — a small medieval town on the Catalonian coast. Local authorities have included it in the list of the twenty best locations for observing the eclipse. According to calculations, the phase of total darkness will last about 55 seconds here.

However, tourists are attracted not only by the rare celestial spectacle. Altafulla is known for its historic center, Vila-Closa, with narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, and ancient arches. Among the main attractions are an 11th-century castle, the Church of Saint Martin, and the Roman villa Els Munts, located near the coast.

Sea lovers will find cozy bays with clear water and old fishermen's cottages, while nature enthusiasts can visit the picturesque estuary of the Gaia River, particularly beautiful at sunset.

For those planning to see the eclipse with their own eyes, specialists advise arriving early, as a large influx of tourists is expected. The most convenient places for observation are considered to be the coast and the surroundings of the chapel of Sant Antoni de Padua.

Astronomers also remind about safety measures. Observing a solar eclipse can only be done through specially certified protective glasses. Even a brief glance at the Sun without protection can lead to serious eye damage.

The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will be one of the brightest astronomical events of the decade. For those who dream of seeing how night falls for a few seconds in the middle of the day, the Spanish Altafulla may become one of the best places in Europe, combining a rare celestial phenomenon with the atmosphere of an ancient Mediterranean town.
