Trinity Saturday and Trinity — 2026: When They Are Celebrated and What Is Important to Know

Trinity Parent Saturday and the Day of the Holy Trinity are among the most important days in the Orthodox calendar. In 2026, Trinity Saturday falls on May 30, and the holiday of Trinity will be celebrated on May 31. These dates are associated with the remembrance of the deceased, prayers, and ancient church traditions.

Trinity Saturday is a day of universal remembrance of the deceased, which is also called Parent Saturday. It precedes the Day of the Holy Trinity. The portal bb.lv explains when Trinity Saturday and Trinity will be in 2026 and why it is customary to remember the deceased on this day.

Trinity Saturday

In the Orthodox Church, there are days of special remembrance for the deceased — they are called Parent Saturdays. On these days, memorial services (panikhidas, litanies) are held, and believers pray for deceased relatives and other Orthodox Christians.

Why is Saturday chosen as the day of remembrance? The fact is that every Saturday is a special day for Christians. According to the biblical narrative, the creation of the world was completed on Saturday, and it became the "day of rest." Therefore, on Saturday, the remembrance of the deceased is performed, who patiently await the last day of the universal Resurrection.

Trinity Saturday occurs on the eve of the Day of the Holy Trinity (Pentecost), that is, on the Saturday before the 50th day after Easter. In 2026, Trinity Saturday falls on May 30.

What Should Be Done on Trinity Saturday?

On this day, believers go to church for the liturgy and panikhida, where deceased Christians are remembered. If a parishioner wants the priest to pray for his relatives, he hands a note with the names of the deceased to the cleric before the service. Also, on Trinity Saturday, one can order a forty-day memorial service in church, and the deceased will be remembered every day for the next forty days.

If it is not possible to visit the church on this day, the deceased can be remembered at home with a prayer before an icon. Another tradition is to bring food to the church. A memorial table — a kanun — is set up for this purpose. Allowed are fasting dishes, homemade pastries, fruits, and liturgical wine. After the blessing, the food is distributed to those who wish. It is also customary to give alms after visiting the church.

After the service, believers go to the cemetery, where they care for the graves of their loved ones; some also tend to nameless graves. A candle can be lit on the grave, and a prayer can be said, after which the grave should be cleaned and the deceased remembered.

It is not allowed to combine Trinity Saturday with celebrations, so birthdays, weddings, and other festivities are better postponed.

It is not recommended to do heavy physical work, clean the house, or engage in other household chores. However, some clergy believe that these prohibitions are only related to ensuring that tasks do not interfere with prayer.

Additionally, it is forbidden to resolve conflicts and argue with loved ones.

Day of the Holy Trinity

Trinity is one of the 12 main Orthodox holidays. It is timed to the events that occurred on the 50th day after Easter — the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Because of this, according to the New Testament, the disciples of Jesus Christ received the gifts of prophecy and healing and became capable of preaching the Gospel in different languages of the peoples of the world.

From this time, the apostles began to boldly preach Christ. The number of church followers began to grow rapidly.

The holiday of Trinity was established in the late 4th century: in 381, at the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople, the doctrine of the three hypostases of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit was affirmed. In Russia, Trinity began to be widely celebrated in the 14th century under Sergius of Radonezh — the founder of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. Since Easter does not have a fixed date, the Day of the Holy Trinity is celebrated at different times each year. In 2026, Orthodox believers celebrated Easter on April 12, and Trinity will be on May 31.

The day after Trinity, June 1, is celebrated as the Day of the Spirit, which is dedicated to the glorification of the Holy Spirit. Essentially, this church holiday continues the festivities in honor of the Holy Trinity.

What Is Done on Trinity?

On the eve of the Day of the Holy Trinity, an all-night vigil is held in churches. On the holiday itself, a great vespers is served, glorifying the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Orthodox Christians traditionally decorate churches with live branches of birch and oak, covering the floors with freshly cut grass. The decorations remain for the entire Trinity week, including the Day of the Spirit. Priests wear green vestments during these days.

Some Orthodox believers also decorate their homes with green birch branches and flowers. Another tradition of Trinity is to hold a feast and invite relatives, friends, and loved ones to the celebration.
