A routine school trip in the U.S., in Hancock County, nearly ended in tragedy: the bus driver lost consciousness right at the wheel. But there was no panic — the children quickly oriented themselves, took control, and managed to stop the bus, then helped the woman regain consciousness.
There were 40 schoolchildren on board, Fox News reports.
The bus was traveling on a four-lane highway. The schoolchildren did not panic and found a way out of the situation. First, one of the students, 12-year-old Jackson Kysnev, noticed that the direction of the bus was changing and grabbed the steering wheel.
Meanwhile, another sixth grader, Darius Clark, ran up and pressed the brakes. Two more children joined them, and together the students were able to park the bus in a safe place, and then they found the driver's inhaler and gave it to the woman — she began to breathe again and came to.
Melissa Saucier, the principal of Hancock Middle School, told local channel WLOX that she "was not surprised to learn that the children remained calm and acted quickly."
"This is certainly an emergency, and it could have ended badly, but the children handled it exactly as they should have. We are extremely proud of them," the publication quotes the school leader.
Driver Leah Taylor later said that she feels better and is grateful to the children for saving her life.
