New rules have been introduced in Livorno for dog owners: now after a walk, they must not only clean up after their pet but also wash away its urine with water. Ignoring the requirements can result in fines of up to 500 euros.
According to new regulations, dog owners must carry bottles of water or spray bottles to clean up after their pets on sidewalks, benches, as well as the wheels of parked cars and scooters. It is prohibited to add chemical cleaning agents to the water. Additionally, animals will be forbidden to relieve themselves near windows and doors, especially at the entrances to residential buildings, offices, and shops.
The new rules will be in effect from May 20 to October 31 — during the period when the problem of odors is exacerbated by heat and low precipitation. The rules apply to anyone walking dogs, regardless of whether the person is the pet owner.
The initiative was launched by the city's mayor, Luca Salvetti. The decision was made after numerous complaints from residents about the strong smell of dog urine, particularly in parks and playgrounds.
The measure, initiated by Mayor Luca Salvetti, aims to address the long-standing issue of unpleasant odors during the hot season, writes bb.lv. Authorities are counting on the discipline of pet owners; however, the success of the new regulation will depend on whether residents are willing to carry water with them and adhere to the new rules in practice.
