Tourist regions of Turkey are facing an invasion of processionary caterpillars capable of causing serious burns and respiratory issues. Stay vigilant during your vacation!
Alarming News from Istanbul
Worrying reports about encounters with unusual caterpillars are actively circulating among the Russian-speaking community in Istanbul. These fluffy larvae, as it turns out, pose a serious threat to humans, especially children, as well as to pets. We are talking about the caterpillars of the processionary moth, which have become a real problem.
Health Risks
Upon direct contact with humans, these insects can cause painful burns and even provoke respiratory inflammation. Their seemingly harmless appearance conceals a serious health danger.
Expert Commentary
Italian entomologist and Lepidoptera specialist Alberto Zilli confirms that such caterpillars are not uncommon in urban greenery, especially in Turkish cities. He noted: "During this period, many, especially in Mediterranean regions, complain about caterpillars of this species and some similar ones; there are several in Turkey."
The Mystery of the "Processionary" Caterpillars
Zilli also explained that the caterpillars are currently actively leaving their tree nests. They descend the trunks of trees in long chains, searching for a suitable place to pupate and subsequently transform into butterflies. This unusual movement, reminiscent of a ceremonial procession, has earned them the name "processionary."
Strict Warning
The scientist categorically warns: under no circumstances should one touch these caterpillars. Their appearance is deceptive, and the consequences of contact can be quite unpleasant.
