The story of Dolly Martinez, a participant in a weight-loss reality show, did not turn into a fairy tale with a happy ending. Despite dreams of transformation, the 300-pound woman was unable to change her life, facing a sad conclusion.
From an early age, we have been accustomed to dreaming of fairy-tale transformations, where heroines find love, happiness, and become the best versions of themselves. Often in weight-loss reality shows, this is exactly what happens: excess pounds disappear, making way for the figure of dreams, a new job, and the inspiration to live life to the fullest. But the story of 300-pound Dolly Martinez, unfortunately, did not have a happy ending. She lacked the inner strength to change her habits and rewrite her own destiny.
Food Drives Away Pain
In childhood, Dolly faced many difficulties and problems. Her father struggled with addiction and chose the streets over family, which deeply wounded the girl. Martinez felt unwanted by her own flesh and blood and began to numb her emotional pain with food.
"The only thing that can distract me from dark thoughts is food. It drives away the pain. Food is the cause of all my troubles, but it’s the only thing that helps me feel good," Dolly candidly shared on the show "My 600-lb Life" (18+).
Dolly's mother had to take on a dual role: to be both a provider and a protector for herself and her little daughter. She got a job as a massage therapist and caregiver in a hospice, bought a car, and life seemed to gradually improve.
However, when Dolly started kindergarten, it became clear that she struggled to adapt to her peers. "In kindergarten, I was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, which causes bipolar disorder. Because of my mental illnesses, I was less socialized, and when I was 7 years old, I weighed 54 kilograms," recalls Dolly.
Neither the children nor the caregivers could accept Dolly as she was. The girl constantly faced insults and attacks, and the only way out was to complain to her mother. The caring parent immediately rushed to help to protect her beloved daughter.
"Dolly always stood out from other children, so they were cruel to her. I had to be a protective mom," her mother recounted.
In addition to maternal support, Dolly consistently sought comfort and protection in food. By the age of 16, due to endless overeating, her weight reached 136 kilograms.
Seeing those huge numbers on the scale, the girl felt neither anger nor a desire to radically change her life. On the contrary, she completely gave up.
"I stopped caring about what I eat, or anything at all. I stopped paying enough attention to high school, and I was expelled," the show participant admitted.
Dolly tried working as a cook, but realizing the need to be on her feet all shift, she lasted only a couple of days. Then she worked in call centers, but couldn’t stay there either.
Martinez developed asthma, which made it difficult for her to stay in the office for long periods. At 21, Dolly met Ricky and married him.
The American hoped that if she couldn’t realize herself in her career, at least she could build a happy family, but disappointment awaited her here as well. Ricky turned out to be an abuser.
Martinez tried to fix the situation by having a child, but the daughter Trinity, who was born, turned out to be unwanted. "They gave the baby up for custody when she was six days old. A year later, they went to court to get her back, but they were deemed incompetent. I had to take custody of Trinity," Dolly's mother shared.
Along with her daughter, Martinez returned to her parental home. By that time, she could no longer fully care for herself, and all the care for her fell on her mother’s shoulders.
I Can’t Get Out of Bed Without Help
By the age of 25, Dolly's weight reached 268 kilograms, and she sought help from the program "My 600-lb Life." By this time, she had become practically completely incapacitated. Due to her enormous body mass, it was extremely difficult for her to move without an oxygen tank, and each morning awakening turned into real torture.
"I wake up shattered, and the first thing I feel is pain from my weight. I can’t get out of bed without help," the American described her condition.
Washing or dressing herself became an unattainable luxury for Dolly. Her mother and friend Shaya, who also had a significant weight, helped her get into the shower.
Dolly suffered not only from difficulty breathing, heart problems, and constant rashes in skin folds. She also developed lymphedema under her abdomen, which is swelling from fluid meant to fight infections.
This formation could only be removed surgically, but only after significant weight loss. Dolly admitted that her main problem was not so much her sedentary lifestyle as it was food.
"Mom tries to make me eat more fruits, vegetables, and meat, but I have a craving for sweets. I love bread and pastries. It’s hard for me to choose products because I need my mom’s approval," Martinez complained.
The only person for whom Dolly wanted to change was her daughter Trinity. "My biggest fear is that my daughter will know what it’s like to live without a mother," Dolly confessed with tears in her eyes.
The American went to Dr. Nazardan, a well-known specialist who had helped hundreds of overweight people transform. Dolly hoped for gastric reduction surgery, but the doctor refused to perform it.
Dr. Nazardan set a condition: Martinez had to lose at least 29 kilograms. He gave her recommendations for a new menu, excluding all snacks and junk food, and prescribed a program of light exercises.
The specialist scheduled a follow-up appointment in two months. At home, it turned out that Dolly's mother was much more ready for a new life than the heroine herself.
"My mom immediately got rid of junk food. I was shocked at how quickly she did it. It was very hard for me; I wanted her to at least warn me or consult with me," Dolly was indignant.
For two months, Dolly lived with the thought that she needed to lose not 29, but twice as many kilograms, as she felt she was doing so much. "I think this is unfair and too strict. If I were doing everything myself, it would be slower, but not so shocking for my body," Dolly expressed her dissatisfaction.
When the day of the weigh-in came, the results were not so rosy. Martinez had lost only seven kilograms, and it turned out she hadn’t strictly followed the diet, allowing herself snacks.
"I don’t understand what happened. It makes no sense. I worked so hard; I can’t imagine how to do more because my mental state is very poor," Dolly sat in confusion before the doctor.
With My Mom, I Feel Trapped
The doctor gave the American another two months to lose the remaining 21 kilograms. However, instead of focusing on her health, Martinez decided to focus on her personal life.
She believed that her mother was only hindering her weight loss and expressed a desire to return to her ex-husband, from whom she had not officially divorced. "With my mom, I feel trapped. My ex-husband asked if I wanted to come back to him, and I started to see it as an opportunity. I know he’s an abuser and very toxic, but he promises that this time it will be different. He is already married and offers me to be his second wife," Dolly shared with enthusiasm.
Martinez ran away from her mother to a shelter, from where her ex-husband picked her up. She was able to live with him for only a couple of days.
Behind the beautiful promises of change, there was nothing, and Dolly faced insults and mockery again due to her excess weight.
"Philip was sent from heaven to save me. He is the love of my life that I have been waiting for. He took me to Texas; we live in a hotel that he pays for with his disability benefits. Philip is practically deaf, but he has a hearing aid," Martinez was satisfied with her life.
"To implement our plan, I started doing my laundry by myself," Dolly boasted, coming to the laundromat with a friend. "I think this is a big step for me. I’m a little worried that I might not have the energy for it."
With her fiancé, Dolly even found housing, but it turned out to be just a room in a dilapidated barrack with neighbors. They were kicked out of there within a day.
Having not followed any of the specialists' recommendations, she returned to Dr. Nazardan only four months later instead of the required two. Martinez could not boast any noticeable results; her weight remained at 250 kilograms.
The doctor refused to perform the surgery. "We will work with you for the entire next year while you go to therapy and lose weight. You also need to bring a little stability into your life and start taking responsibility for yourself. Then, perhaps, we can approve your surgery," Nazardan concluded.
Without constant monitoring and cameras, Dolly completely relaxed and could not achieve the body of her dreams. Due to her enormous weight, in March 2026, she was hospitalized.
She was diagnosed with fluid accumulation in her heart and lungs. Dolly spent several weeks in a coma, and in April, she died of heart failure.
