Incredible Discovery: A Colossal Forest Hidden Underground in China 0 11

In southern China, at a depth of over 200 meters, a team of spelunkers made an astonishing discovery: they found a mysterious forest hidden within the depths of a giant karst sinkhole. This extraordinary place is located near the village of Ping’e in Le County, which is famous for its unique landscape.

The discovered sinkhole is just one of about thirty colossal karst formations recorded in this region. Such phenomena, known as tian keng or "heavenly pits," are formed over thousands of years as water slowly erodes limestone rock underground. As a result of this process, huge underground cavities develop, which eventually collapse, exposing these impressive depressions.

Descending into the sinkhole to a depth of 192 meters (630 feet), scientists were astonished to find a dense, completely untouched forest. This hidden world spans an area comparable to three football fields.

The head of the expedition from the China Geological Survey, Chen Lixin, expressed his excitement: "I wouldn’t be surprised to find species in these caves that have never been described or recorded by science before." This discovery opens up vast prospects for biological research.

Ancient Trees and Unique Ecosystem

Among the lush vegetation, majestic ancient trees stand out, some reaching nearly 40 meters in height. Such unique environments, as noted by the Washington Post, can function as natural refuges for flora.

They allow species to evolve along a unique path, different from the evolution outside these isolated ecosystems. It is precisely due to its isolation that this karst sinkhole has been able to preserve the forest in its pristine state for centuries.

Diversity of Karst Landscapes

George Veni from the National Cave and Karst Research Institute emphasized that the nature of karst landscapes greatly depends on geographical location. In China, these formations often impress with their scale and grandeur.

Here, colossal karst sinkholes and impressive cave entrances are found, while in other regions of the planet, such phenomena may be much smaller in size and less noticeable to the human eye.
