The hunting season for 2026/2027 has begun in Latvia. Summarizing the data, the State Forest Service concluded that the number of moose harvested in the past season decreased, while the number of harvested red deer, roe deer, wild boar, and beavers increased.
The service reminds hunters that they need to purchase new seasonal hunting cards.
As for the previous season, hunters harvested 4,146 moose (78.6% of the allowable volume). By March 31, 2026, the Mednis mobile application recorded 30,384 harvested red deer (85.8%), as well as 19,871 roe deer, 24,502 wild boar, and 16,108 beavers, which are classified as unlimited hunting objects.
The Forest Service urges hunters to timely acquire seasonal hunting cards for the new season, which began on April 1 and will continue until March 31 of the following year. The seasonal card grants the right to hunt using firearms and equipment for both limited and unlimited species of animals. Hunting without a valid seasonal card is prohibited.
As of March 31, 2026, 4,319 hunters received a seasonal hunting card for the 2026/2027 season. In the previous season, 18,800 cards were issued. Moreover, 92% of hunters submitted applications and paid for them online.
The seasonal hunting card is a digital record in the State Forest Register, so there is no need to print it. Information about the validity of the card is displayed in the "User Profile" section of the Mednis application.
To purchase a seasonal card through the State Forest Service's electronic services portal, one must log in using the identification tools of the latvija.lv portal, submit an application, and pay for the service directly on the platform.
It is also possible to purchase a card at the service's offices or pay for it outside the portal. However, the service warns that in such cases, processing may take longer.
To obtain a seasonal card, a state fee of 30 euros must be paid. A reduced rate of 15 euros is available for pensioners, individuals with disabilities of groups I, II, or III, students, individuals aged 16 to 18, and members of large families.
Detailed information about seasonal hunting cards and the procedure for obtaining them is available on the official website of the State Forest Service.
