An Unexpected Link Between Gum Health and Memory Revealed

Chronic inflammation in the oral cavity exacerbates neurodegeneration.

The condition of the gums and oral cavity may be related to the development of Alzheimer's disease. This conclusion was reached by scientists who found a connection between gum inflammation, immune system disorders, and cognitive function decline. The results of the study were published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (IJMS).

The study involved 68 participants — patients with Alzheimer's disease and healthy volunteers. Participants were assessed for gum health, hygiene levels, cognitive functions, and immune indicators. It was found that patients with the disease exhibit an 'failure' of the immune response: in a normal state, it is weakened, but upon contact with bacteria, it becomes excessively active.

Moreover, the researchers discovered that the more severe the gum inflammation, the worse the results on memory and thinking tests. This is true even for mild forms of inflammation, such as gingivitis, which often goes unnoticed.

The authors note that chronic inflammation in the oral cavity can have a systemic impact and participate in processes related to neurodegeneration. They emphasize that regular oral hygiene may be an important factor in the prevention and slowing of cognitive impairments.
