Information has emerged that rapper Markul (Mark Markulis), a citizen of Latvia, obtained a Russian passport in February 2024. This was reported by the Telegram channel SHOT on February 22, 2026.
As SHOT found out, 32-year-old Latvian citizen Mark Markulis (his real name) took just two years to go from a public stance against Russia's war in Ukraine (February 2022) to obtaining a Russian passport (February 2024). However, he now faces the threat of losing his native Latvian citizenship.
Immediately after the war began, Markul stated that there would never be a person in his circle who could justify what was happening, and he flew to London. Nevertheless, this did not prevent him from continuing to earn money in Russia, and by August 2022, he released the song "Arrow" together with Tosey Chaykina. For some time, Markulis lived in Europe, including Italy, but eventually returned to Moscow and began to successfully hold concerts, filling arenas with thousands of spectators.
In February 2024, the singer obtained Russian citizenship. However, by doing so, he violated the legislation of his native Latvia, where it is prohibited to obtain Russian citizenship as a second citizenship. The penalty is the loss of Latvian citizenship.
