Neurologist: micro-awakenings increase strain on the heart.
Fatigue in the morning after sleep often indicates insufficient rest duration, which poses a health risk. This was stated by neurologist Maria Lavrenova.
According to her, the problem often lies in micro-awakenings — brief episodes of brain activation lasting less than 15 seconds. They are an integral part of normal sleep and typically contribute to memory consolidation and the transition to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
"However, when there are too many micro-awakenings or they last longer, it leads to unpleasant health consequences," Lavrenova explained.
As the specialist emphasizes, studies indicate an increase in blood pressure, a rise in blood sugar levels, and strain on the heart due to excessive sleep fragmentation. Moreover, frequent small awakenings hinder reaching the deep stages of slow sleep and REM sleep. In turn, these stages are crucial for physical and cognitive recovery, the doctor points out.
