Household cleaning products can destroy the lungs of people and pets.
Household cleaning products can be dangerous for the lungs, warned therapist Dmitry Demidik. "The most dangerous substances we use at home are undoubtedly chlorine-containing products — they can cause irritation of the respiratory tract with the risk of chemical burns. Glass cleaning products containing ammonia or ammonium can damage the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract when inhaled, forming a caustic alkaline gas," Demidik warned.
According to him, acidic products that emit caustic vapors, irritating the mucosa and alveoli of the lungs, can also be dangerous. Various solvents are particularly harmful, he added: they can have a direct toxic effect on the lungs and central nervous system.
"You should never mix different cleaning products together. They can react unpredictably, causing damage to the respiratory system, skin, and eyes, up to chemical burns. It is categorically prohibited to mix chlorine-containing products with ammonia, as the resulting chloramines cause severe bronchospasms and can lead to pulmonary edema. Mixing chlorine-containing agents with acids produces chlorine gas," the doctor explained.
