Regular consumption of mineral water strengthens muscles in the elderly.

Regular consumption of mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium can positively affect muscle health and reduce the risk of falls in people over 50. This conclusion was reached by Italian scientists who published the results of a randomized double-blind study in the journal Nutrients.

The study involved 98 adults around the age of 60, some of whom exhibited signs of osteosarcopenia—a combination of decreased bone density and muscle mass. For a year, one group consumed one liter of mineral water daily with high calcium and magnesium content, while the other group drank low-mineralization water. After six months, the fall risk in the first group was found to be 82 percent lower, and after a year, participants showed a statistically significant increase in muscle mass.

A particularly pronounced effect was observed in individuals with osteosarcopenia: their muscle mass gain was maintained both after six months and after 12 months. However, no significant changes in muscle strength or overall physical activity were found, indicating a targeted but potentially clinically significant effect of the minerals.

The authors emphasize that calcium and magnesium from mineral water are well absorbed by the body and can serve as a simple additional strategy to support musculoskeletal health. Although this measure does not replace physical activity and comprehensive prevention, it can be an accessible way to reduce frailty and the risk of falls in older age.
