The new Los Angeles district attorney recently lifted the moratorium on the death penalty that was in place under his predecessor, but a decision on the application of the highest penalty in this case has not yet been made.

According to the district attorney's office, Nick Reiner fatally stabbed his parents with a knife early on Sunday morning, December 14, before leaving the house. The bodies of Rob and Michelle Reiner were discovered around 3:00 PM that same day by their 28-year-old daughter Romy, who lives nearby. A CNN source reported that the victims had their throats slashed.

The investigation revealed that Nick was living in a guest house on his parents' property, but he was not there when the police arrived. The suspect was apprehended approximately 25 kilometers from the crime scene — near the University of Southern California campus — about six hours after the bodies were found. He did not resist arrest. Meanwhile, tabloids circulated a video showing Reiner Jr. calmly walking down the street past a gas station, dressed in a hoodie and carrying a sports bag, after the murder.

It is known that Nick Reiner had struggled with drug addiction for many years, which he had previously spoken about publicly, and exhibited aggressive behavior. Media reports revealed that the day before the tragedy, he had an argument with his parents at comedian Conan O’Brien's Christmas party. Additionally, according to Page Six, he had a conflict with actor Bill Hader that same evening. A source present at the event noted that Nick kept to himself, barely interacted with guests, and appeared unkempt.
