Psychologists Explained How Often to Take a Vacation

A short vacation once a season positively affects mental health, while standard two-week breaks provide only short-term joy.

Expert: Maria Shestova, Candidate of Psychological Sciences

“One of the latest meta-analyses shows that a ‘typical’ vacation does improve well-being, but the effect is small, and vacations have little impact on overall life satisfaction.

Interestingly, increasing the length of the vacation does not lead to a higher level of well-being. Researchers also note that just a week after returning to work, the sense of well-being returns to its previous level. Therefore, it is better to plan and regularly take short vacations throughout the year. In other words, the standard vacation of 28 days is more wisely divided into four periods of seven days,” explained Shestova.

According to her, even small weekend trips help recover from work stress. It is optimal to plan short trips with friends, family, including children — this brings more positive emotions.

Overall, the expert adds, any change of activity is considered a full-fledged rest: sports, outdoor walks, and interacting with animals.
