Chronic sleep deprivation lowers immunity and leads to weight gain.
Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to immune system problems and weight gain, warned psychologist and sleep specialist Sue Peacock. She discussed the consequences of sleeping less than six hours a day with the publication Metro.
Peacock explained that during sleep, the immune system produces cytokines — protective substances that fight infections. Cytokines help induce sleep and thereby give the immune system more energy to protect the body from diseases. According to the doctor, if a person does not get enough sleep, the production of these substances decreases, which increases vulnerability to illnesses and prolongs recovery time.
Moreover, the specialist continued, lack of sleep provokes anxiety, which in turn hinders falling asleep. Additionally, sleep deprivation reduces the ability to maintain a positive mood, increases appetite, leads to overeating, and consequently, weight gain.
Her colleague Katarina Lederle added that lack of sleep can negatively affect thyroid hormone levels and lead to menstrual cycle disorders and miscarriages in women.
