Psychiatrist: people with schizophrenia use the pronoun "I" too often.

Psychiatrist Vladimir Skavysh revealed an unexpected sign of schizophrenia identified by scientists during a new study.

According to the doctor, the research showed that people with schizophrenia use the pronoun "I" much more frequently than healthy individuals. "One explanation for this phenomenon is related to the heightened self-focus of a person with schizophrenia. They are literally fixated on their own thoughts and feelings, which is reflected in their speech," said Skavysh.

He also noted that people with schizophrenia often experience other speech difficulties: grammatical errors, problems with word choice and context relevance, and anomalies in the use of conjunctions and function words. However, it is the excessive use of the pronoun "I" that has proven to be the most stable and measurable marker.

In the doctor's opinion, this discovery is significant for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. It will help distinguish this disorder from manifestations of depression. Additionally, this indicator will allow for the identification of schizophrenia in at-risk young people and adolescents before they exhibit pronounced symptoms.
