If you hurry to Basel, you can still see this piece.
Mason's sculpture is displayed in Basel (Switzerland). It has already been purchased by a collector who wished to remain anonymous. The hyper-realistic sculpture depicting Donald Trump crucified on a white cross in an orange prison jumpsuit was exhibited at the Basel Art Gallery in Switzerland, just weeks after its premiere near Basel's Central Station was postponed due to concerns about public discontent.
The work titled "Saint or Sinner" belongs to British artist Mason Storm, known for his satirical and often politically charged creations. Like Banksy, he cultivates anonymity by wearing masks and balaclavas.
Here, Storm plays on the dichotomy of vertical crucifixion and the horizontal execution cart, creating a provocative space where religion and politics intertwine to question whether the sitting president of the United States deserves paradise or a lethal injection.
The sculpture is hauntingly realistic, which delights Konrad Breznik, the owner of the Gleis 4 gallery. "Every wrinkle is visible, the skin is so realistic that it is truly unsettling," he told AFP.
According to Breznik, Trump might actually appreciate this work.
"I am absolutely sure that Mr. Trump could see himself as a modern-day Jesus," he said. "I am almost certain: he firmly believes he is doing the right thing."
Strangely enough, Trump himself stated last month aboard Air Force One:
"I don’t think there’s anything that could lead me to heaven. I don’t think I’m going to make it there. […] I’m not sure I can get to heaven."
Another question is whether this work can be exhibited in the U.S.… According to the gallery, it has already been sold to a "world-renowned" European collector, whose name is not disclosed. The sculpture "Saint or Sinner" will be on display in Basel until mid-November.
