The director sparked controversy with his participation in the Moscow International Film Week.

Woody Allen, who will turn 90 this November, is working on a new project. This time, Allen has chosen Madrid as the main character of his film. The city administration has supported the director by allocating 1.5 million euros from state funds. According to the terms of the agreement, the film must be entirely shot within the city, and the title must include the word 'Madrid'. Currently, the working title of Woody Allen's new project is Wasp 2026. Filming is set to begin next year.

This is not the first film that Woody Allen has made in Spain. In 2007, he worked in Barcelona on the comedy 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'. In 2019, Allen found refuge in Spain after his daughter Dylan Farrow accused him of abuse, which led to the director's 'cancellation' in Hollywood. At that time, he also filmed 'Rifkin's Festival' in San Sebastián.

Previously, Woody Allen participated via video link in one of the sessions of the Moscow International Film Week. The conversation with him was moderated by Russian director Fyodor Bondarchuk, who at one time supported Russia's annexation of Crimea. 'I have been to Moscow, I have been to St. Petersburg. I am someone who has always loved Russian cinema,' Allen said during the conversation.

When asked about plans to shoot a film in Russia, he responded negatively. Allen also described his visit to Leningrad during the Soviet era as 'not a very pleasant experience' but did not go into details.

'By participating in a festival that unites fans and Putin's mouthpieces, Allen is willfully turning a blind eye to the atrocities that Russia has been committing in Ukraine daily for the past 11 years,' the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated. The director's appearance there was labeled as 'a disgrace and an insult to the memory of Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who have been killed and wounded by Russian military forces.'
