Director Ari Aster, known for the films 'Hereditary' and 'Midsommar', has decided on his next project. According to insiders, the filmmaker is starting work on the film 'Scapegoat', which will be a continuation of his satirical drama 'Eddington'. Scarlett Johansson will play the lead role in the new film.
Production will once again be handled by A24, which has collaborated with Aster on all of his previous projects. The producers will be the director himself and his longtime partner Lars Knudsen through their company Square Peg. Details of the plot are not yet disclosed — the team prefers to keep the story under wraps.
It is reported that Aster completed the script at the end of last year. However, the creators had to adjust the shooting schedule to accommodate Scarlett Johansson's availability, as the actress was already involved in several major projects, including the new film in the 'The Exorcist' franchise and the sequel to 'Batman'. However, after reading the script, she agreed to join the film, and the producers decided to postpone the start of filming to a later date.
Recall that A24's previous work, Ari Aster's satirical drama 'Eddington', was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. As for Johansson, the actress recently completed work on her directorial debut 'Eleanor the Great'. Viewers will also soon see her in James Gray's film 'The Tigger', where she starred alongside Adam Driver and Miles Teller.
