On April 24, a new exhibition opened at the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, allowing visitors to continue their acquaintance with the works of Mark Rothko in his homeland.

The exhibition is composed of items from the private collections of Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel and will be open until April 2029. Like previous exhibitions, the new selection covers all stages of Rothko's creativity – from early works and pieces influenced by surrealism to multifaceted experiments and 'classical' compositions of his later period.

The exhibition was created in close collaboration with the artist's children, whose ongoing support ensures the presence of Rothko's works in Daugavpils. The Rothko Museum is the only place in Eastern Europe where original works by Rothko are on permanent display, and each subsequent exhibition expands the understanding of his art.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, museum director Maris Chacuka emphasized, "The opportunity to showcase these works in Rothko's homeland is a great honor. We are proud and happy to continue telling the story of Rothko to both Latvian and international audiences and to deepen the dialogue between his legacy and contemporary artistic processes."

Meanwhile, in her congratulatory letter to the museum, Kate Rothko Prizel highlighted the close connection to her father's childhood city and noted that Rothko's works continue to attract viewers in the 21st century.

Mark Rothko was born in 1903 in Daugavpils, where he spent the first decade of his life before moving with his family to the United States. Although the peak of his creative career occurred in the U.S., Daugavpils is an important reference point in his biography.

Alongside the Rothko exhibition, the museum opened an exhibition titled "Transference. The Rothko Motif" by Latvian textile artist Iveta Vecenane. In this exhibition, the artist interprets Rothko's works from his surrealist period in the tapestry technique.

The exhibition "Transference. The Rothko Motif" will be open until August 30, 2026, while the exhibition "Rothko. From the Family Collection" will be open until April 2029.
